Arabesque

A ballet pose on one leg with the other leg stretched straight out behind.

In an arabesque the dancer balances on one leg while the other leg is lifted and extended straight behind the body. The arms reach forward or to the side to make one long line from fingertips to toes. The lifted leg may be low, level with the hip, or higher. The standing leg can be straight or bent. Different ballet schools number the arabesques by which arm is forward. The pose appears in almost every classical ballet, often held at the end of a phrase.
