Sources and photo credits

Ghungroo stands on the work of volunteers who document the world's dances in the open.

Facts

Wikidata (public domain, CC0) and Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0). Every dance page and country overview links to the article and the record it was written from.

Wording and attribution

Ghungroo does not copy text. Dance pages and country overviews take their facts from the Wikipedia article named at the foot of each page and are rewritten in Ghungroo's own words. A check compares each page with its source; any page that carries over more than a short phrase is rewritten before it is shown. Because the pages are adapted from Wikipedia, they credit the article and its contributors, link to the original, and are shared under the same CC BY-SA 4.0 licence.

Photos

All photos come from Wikimedia Commons. Only freely licensed images are used: public domain, CC0, CC BY and CC BY-SA. Each photo on a dance page is credited beside it with its author and licence and links to its page on Commons. Small pictures in lists, cards and strips are credited at the foot of the page they appear on, under "Photo credits on this page", with the author, the licence and a link to the source. Photos may be resized; no other changes are made. If a photo is yours and should not be here, write to us and it will be taken down.

Drawings

The formation plans, rhythm strips and line sketches of dancers are drawn by Ghungroo's own code from what each page says: the formation, the metre, what is carried. Where no free photo exists, a sketch stands in for it. They are diagrams, not pictures of a particular performance or person, and they are free to reuse with a link back.

Good reading

The articles listed under "Good reading" on a dance page are ones its Wikipedia article cites, from publishers and institutions such as UNESCO, Britannica, the BBC, The Hindu, Sangeet Natak Akademi, Sahapedia, Smithsonian, the Library of Congress and Dance Magazine. Ghungroo shows the headline and the publisher and links to the original; it does not copy the article.

Video

Ghungroo hosts no video. "Watch it danced" opens a YouTube search for the dance; the results are not chosen or checked by Ghungroo.

Ways of dancing, the dance calendar and the glossary

Original text by the Ghungroo desk, written with AI assistance. Each way of dancing lists its sources. Festival dates are worked out by rule (fixed dates, Easter, and the Hebrew, Islamic, Chinese, Persian and Ethiopian calendars); days set by other lunisolar calendars use published dates. Islamic dates depend on the sighting of the moon and can shift by a day.

Country outlines are from Natural Earth (public domain).

The weekly round

Every Monday: seven dances you may not know, what the world is dancing this week, and one way of dancing explained.
