Classical dance
A dance tradition with a fixed technique, a body of theory, long formal training and a recognised repertoire.
Also: classical form
A dance is usually called classical when it has a codified vocabulary of steps and positions, a system for training dancers over many years, a link to written theory or old texts, and a repertoire handed down through teachers. Western classical ballet is one example. In India the Sangeet Natak Akademi recognises eight classical dances: Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Mohiniyattam, Odissi and Sattriya. The label is a mark of status and is sometimes disputed. It does not mean that a form is older or better than a folk dance.
