Crew
A team of street dancers who practise, perform and battle together under one name.
Also: dance crew
A crew is the basic unit of hip-hop dance culture. Members train together, represent their neighbourhood or city, and face other crews in battles. The Rock Steady Crew, founded in the Bronx in 1977, helped carry breaking round the world. Crews often work like extended families, with older dancers teaching the younger ones. Since the 2000s the word has also been used for groups that perform tightly rehearsed routines in televised and international hip-hop competitions.
