Dance notation
A system of symbols for writing down dance on paper, as sheet music does for music.
Also: movement notation, dance score
Dance notation records movement so that a dance can be kept and staged again. It is harder than writing music, since it must show the whole body, in space, over time. Many systems have been tried since the fifteenth century. The Beauchamp-Feuillet system, published in France in 1700, drew floor paths with signs for the steps. The two most used today are Labanotation and Benesh notation. In practice most dance is still passed on in person, and now also by video.
