Dhol

A large two-headed barrel drum hung from the shoulder and beaten with sticks, the sound of bhangra.

Also: dholak, dhak

The dhol is a wooden barrel drum with a skin at each end. It hangs from a strap round the player's neck and is played standing. A thick curved stick beats the deep bass side and a thin cane stick strikes the sharp treble side. It is very loud and meant for the open air. In Punjab it drives bhangra and giddha, and versions of it accompany folk dances, weddings and processions across north India and Pakistan. The dholak is a smaller hand-played relative.
