Floorwork
Movement done lying, sitting, kneeling or rolling on the floor.
Also: floor work
Floorwork is dancing that uses the ground as a partner instead of something to stand on. The dancer may roll, slide, spiral down to sitting or push up from lying. Classical ballet rarely leaves the feet, so floorwork became one of the marks of modern dance in the twentieth century. Martha Graham began her classes sitting on the floor. It is also important in contemporary dance, jazz, belly dance and breaking, where it overlaps with downrock.
