Hālau

A school of hula, led by a master teacher called the kumu hula.

Also: hālau hula, hula school, kumu hula

Hālau means a long house or meeting house, and by extension a place of learning. A hālau hula is a school where hula is taught together with the chants, language, history and values that go with it. Its head is the kumu hula. Kumu means source or teacher. A kumu has usually trained for many years under their own teacher and been formally given the right to teach. Students show loyalty to their hālau, and schools compete at events such as the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo.
