Rasa

The feeling or flavour that a performance awakens in the audience.

Rasa literally means juice, taste or essence. In Indian aesthetics it names what the spectator experiences when a performance works. It is not the performer's private emotion but a shared, refined feeling that the audience savours. The idea is set out in the Natya Shastra, which says rasa arises when the causes, signs and passing moods of an emotion are properly shown on stage. A dancer portrays a bhava, and the audience tastes the rasa. Tradition counts nine rasas.
