Processional dance

A dance that travels along a route, through streets or to a sacred place, instead of staying on one spot.

Also: processional, procession

A processional dance moves forward as it goes. The dancers advance down a street, round a village or toward a shrine, usually with musicians walking alongside. Carnival parades in Rio de Janeiro and Port of Spain are processions on a huge scale. Others are the Helston Furry Dance in Cornwall, the dancing procession of Echternach in Luxembourg, wedding processions across the Arab world and the temple festival processions of India. The steps are usually simple and repeated, so that a crowd can keep moving together.
