Time step

A set rhythmic pattern in tap dance, traditionally used to show the band the tempo.

A time step is a short tap phrase with a fixed rhythm, usually repeated on alternate feet. In the days of vaudeville a tap dancer would open with a time step so the musicians could hear the speed wanted. There are many versions. The common ones are called single, double and triple, after the number of sounds made at one point in the phrase. Time steps are usually danced several times and then closed with a different phrase called a break.
